Phonics and Reading Schemes

At Stratford upon Avon Primary School we follow Letters and Sounds when teaching phonics.

You can follow the link below to find out more about the different phases and access resources to practice at home.

We use phonics tracker to assess the children and ensure they are making good progress. At the end of Year One children complete Statutory phonic assessment.

When children start in Reception they explore books and learn to enjoy them before reading. It is important that the children know specific phonemes before beginning to decode words. This builds their confidence.

As the children progress with their phonics they are introduced to different reading books. We use more than one reading scheme so the children are exposed to different genres. We use Bug Club, Oxford Reading Tree and Rigby Reading Scheme to name some. We also ensure the children have access to a wide range of non-fiction books in our school library.
